Update on our Proposed Special Law Enforcement
License Plate
On February 28, 2005 Senate Bill # 143 was drafted by State
Senator Valerie Wiener and supported by a former Councilwoman
who was the former Chairperson of the Commission on Special License
Plates. I want to thank them for their time and effort to support
our request.
The bill would exclude the requirement for 1000 signatures to
have our plate issued. Senator Valerie Wiener presented the Bill
to the Judiciary Committee on March 8, 2005 at which time public
hearings took place. Many of our interested parties testified
in favor of the bill. The bill was put into a workshop status
to be discussed further before coming up for a vote.
Prior to a date for the vote
on this bill, representatives in Carson City from the Police
Protective Association of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police
Department lobbied against the passage of this bill. They explained
to the various Senators on the committee that no active officer
would purchase the said plate and it didn’t
warrant being issued.
The purpose of this plate was
two fold. First, the plate would honor all active and retired
law enforcement officers living and working in the State of
Nevada for their dedication and years of service. This plate
would be similar to the Firefighters, both active and volunteers
honoring them. Second, the funds raised for the sale of this
plate would be used to help injured officers and their families
as well as those officers killed in the line of duty. This
would of course include members from the Las Vegas Metropolitan
Police Department. As this State continues to grow at such
a rapid pace, the likelihood of increased violence and the
threat to police officers’ lives becomes greater. I
only hope that the Las Vegas Metro Police Protective Association
will be able to support those officers and their families in
the future. Better yet, I would expect those representatives
in Carson City to take funds from their pockets to help.
In conclusion, we gave this
the best we could but we never had the support of the major
police agency in the State. It’s
a shame. I see so many special license plates in this State that
I would never purchase yet, when it comes to honoring the police,
even their own don’t support the effort.
