September
11, 2001 will be always remembered as a black day in history
for our country.
The loss of so many lives in the Terrorist attack on the
World Trade Center Towers and the Pentagon has awakened this
country to the imminent threat of similar attacks in the
future. Law Enforcement agencies now realize they are not
equipped to respond to such horrific events and are trying
to cope with the shortages of manpower to utilize in a crisis
situation.
The
first project suggested to the Coalition members was the creation
of an all Volunteer Homeland Reserve Unit (VHRU). This Volunteer
group would consist of retired Law Enforcement Officers living
in Las Vegas. The plan for the VHRU was drafted prior to the
formation of this Coalition and was presented in January to
the entire organizations/clubs participating who all agreed
to support this effort.
A
letter was prepared for members outlining the Coalition, its
goals and how this group would work together to form the Volunteer
Homeland Reserve Unit (VHRU). An application to volunteer was
prepared as well a second letter explaining the structure and
how the VHRU would function. All the participating Coalition
organizations/clubs mailed these letters and the form to their
membership. Within three months the VHRU attracted 65 retired
Volunteers from both Police and Federal agencies across the
country that reside in Las Vegas. The response was better than
expected and every day the number of Volunteers is increasing.
The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department has accepted the
concept after initial meetings with their representatives.
A meeting of the Leadership Leaders and a general membership
meeting of all the Volunteers has been scheduled.
Any
former Law Enforcement Officers wishing to participate as a
Volunteer can open and complete the attached application.
